The quest to look tan has been a long-standing mission for many of us, particularly during the summer. While some girls are blessed with olive or dark skin tones, those of us with porcelain complexions will try just about anything (within reason!) to lend some color to our skin. We use self-tanner and bronzer, and we're constantly on the lookout for nail polish shades or clothing that can make us look just a tad more tan.

But What About Your Hair Color?

As we all contemplate the hot summer hair hue we'll be rocking on the beach, it raises the inevitable questions: Can a different hair color make me look more tan? The answer is yes ... kind of. While a hair shade doesn't have the power to make you look like a bronzed goddess, it can help breathe a little life and color back into your complexion and, on the flip side, wash you out if it's not a good match with your skin tone. We've included the hair colors that will complement your skin best and keep you from looking pasty this summer!

Pale to Medium Skin

Although hair color can't give you an instant glow, it can help offset some paleness, especially for those with fairer skin. Try a hair color with some warmer tones to it, like a honey or strawberry blonde or chestnut brown. You could even add subtle warmth by highlighting your hair with one of these shades or going for a soft sombré. This will help radiate some color and offset your cool, pale tone. We wouldn't recommend going drastically dark with jet black or going drastically light with an almost-white, ashy blond. The key is adding warmth.

Olive to Dark Skin

It's hard to wash out warmer skin tones, as you've already got some color to your skin. However, it is still possible to look pasty, so go for shades that will accentuate the warmth. In this case, a little contrast works in your favor. These cooler-toned shades include caramel, champagne blond and mahogany brown (with a cool, blue undertone). Feeling brave? Jump on the latest trend and try one (or two) of these shades with the new tortoiseshell hair craze! You'll add instant dimension to your hair and complementing your skin tone!
