As this last summer was definitely the season of the fiesta wedding, we weren't surprised to see plenty of Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) events popping up this fall. Want to embrace this celebratory theme? Here are some fabulous ideas to help you plan your wedding around this fascinating Mexican holiday.

There is really no DIY project simpler than tissue paper fringe. If you can use scissors, you are set. Create backdrops for your tables or a giant one for your photo backdrop (above).

The key to throwing a chic Day of the Dead wedding is mixing fun with elegant. Sherbet-colored flowers and succulents with a printed table runner will blend perfectly with this theme (above). Other classic "fiesta" wedding details should be incorporated, too. We love how easily papel picado (the tissue paper flag banners seen below) can completely transform a venue's vibe.

Sugar skulls are such a central element to a Day of the Dead theme. Use them in key places in your decor, such as at each place setting (below) or next to your centerpieces. BTW, all bright flowers will work for your arrangements, but if you have the chance to use marigolds, go with it. They are the flower most often used in Day of the Dead rituals to honor ancestors and remember those who have departed.

Another cool Mexican ephemera to use is loteria cards. Shown above as a table number, these bingo-style cards are colorful and unique.

From your ceremony arch to the top of your technicolor cake, tissue paper flowers are a beautiful way to enhance your wedding's style. There are plenty of DIY kits available to make your own, or you can purchase them already assembled. Either way, make sure that they are spread throughout your reception-they're gorgeous in the background of photos.

One new trend we spotted is the influence of different cultures in Day of the Dead wedding details. For example, this sweet cake topper above merges Japan's wooden kokeshi dolls with sugar skull masks. Particularly if you are having a multicultural wedding, it can be meaningful to find items that celebrate both sides of the aisle.

Favors for a Day of the Dead wedding can be a blast. Give away mini bottles of tequila in clear bags filled with crazy confetti (above, left) or have your local bakery make sugar skull cookies to hand to guests on their way out.

But whatever you do, don't forget the pinata. This Mexican-American party staple is too awesome to pass up, from battling it out for candy (below, left) to a creative guest book idea (the couple below had their friends fill a monogram pinata with advice for them to crack open on their first anniversary).
