Floral Country Folk Wedding - Whimsical Wonderland Weddings

Floral Country Folk Wedding - Whimsical Wonderland Weddings

via

Holly and Andrew were married on the 15th August 2015 in a meaningful church ceremony followed by a reception at Priory Hall in Suffolk. They envisioned a day filled with flowers, folk music and all in a gorgeous country setting.

Andrew made his own kilt and his best man's too, in which they looked very handsome. The best man crafted Andrew's dirk and it was also used to cut the cake, which made for a lovely touch. Holly looked stunning meanwhile in her custom made romantic gown and she had the most beautiful long luscious locks set into curls.

Maids in pale pink frocks, hessian décor, lavender stems and the floral cake all looked so pretty.

Thanks so much to Colin Clay for sharing these wonderful images today.

THE PROPOSAL | March 17th 2015 in The Pyrnees. My mum has a tiny shack in the mountains. I had taken Holly away for a week and had planned to wait a few days for us to decompress from London life. The morning after we arrived I realised I was far too excited and had to do it that day! I told her I wanted to go for a walk to a place we had walked to a Christmas before. We put on our jackets and started walking up. It was raining all the way up. Just before we got to our destination we walked up past the snow line. Finally about 15 yards from the edge of the cliff we were walking to I found a little glade of snow. 'This is it!' I announced, which Holly kindly shrugged along to. We sat on a log and I handed her a letter. Holly's 'Love Language' is written words so I wrote her a love letter. She insisted on holding my hand all the way through reading it, which was frustrating as I desperately wanted grab the ring from my pocket! Finally the last line said '...I'm afraid I have one more thing to ask of you...' I went down on one knee and asked Holly to be my wife. She was so shocked that she said 'Of course I will...are you sure!?' (she had assumed I would be another couple of years!)

THE VISION | Floral Country Folk. We are both country kids and Andrew in particular is very into folk music, barn dancing and tradition. We really wanted the whole day to feel like a beautiful country garden.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | Holly was a machine! She made a google doc with 27 tabs on it for everything from guest lists to MC announcements. We were engaged on the side of a mountain in the Pyrenees in March and the planning started there and then. Holly was going to start teaching in September and we realised we didn't really want to wait another year to get married. Both of us wanted a summer wedding, and if we wanted to go on honeymoon before term then we had just about 5 months to turn it round.

BUDGET | We went only slightly over our meagre budget but we were so blessed to have an amazing day which frankly punched well above its weight!

THE VENUE | The service was at St Mary's Church, Woodbridge which was Holly's school church. Holly really wanted to have it in her tiny village church but it is so tiny we wouldn't have all fitted in so we chose St Mary's instead. Our friends brought cake to the church and we bought a load of Cava just for those who couldn't come to the reception and to keep the rabble amused while Colin our photographer took some shots of us.

The reception was at Priory Hall in Hadleigh. We really struggled with this. We really wanted to have a lovely big marquee in a field or someone's garden. Holly's mother sadly has a garden on a slope and we started to find that the cost for a marquee grew and grew every time you thought about it! Hire the field, and the marquee... and the lining, and lighting, and generator for the lighting.. and the chairs and table, plates, loos, catering tent... eventually the cost became prohibitive. So instead we started looking at church village halls. They were often run down or very modern and again it was going to be hard to fit 150 guests in. We are both committed Christian and Christian believe that it is 3 people who get married. The bride, the groom and Christ! So eventually we prayed and asked where Jesus wanted the reception! I know. Crazy. A picture popped into my head of a big room with beams and young guys a couple of hundred years ago hanging over a balcony heckling and laughing at one another. Neither of us knew what it meant so we ignored it. A couple of days later Holly sent pictures to me of Priory Hall. It has an in situ marquee, loos, catering tent and beautiful gardens. I did a google walk through and there was also a Tudor hall which looked exactly like the picture which had popped into my head! We agreed that this was the place and that was that!

The venue was great. People wandered around the gardens, had canapés and home made elderflower champagne (it had been brewing in lemonade bottles in my bath since early June!) on the lawn, ate in the marquee and did barn dance/ceilidh in the Tudor hall. Lots of the guests spilled out into the lovely little court yard during the dancing to cool off and go to the bar.

The venue themselves were extraordinarily helpful with finding caterers (hog roast! yum) and a local pub to provide booze for after the reception at a pay bar. They also made suggestions for children and almost everything else. It really was the best find of the whole experience.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | The dress was custom made, romantic ivory organza dress with a lace bodice with a beautiful bow to finish at the back. My necklace was my wedding gift from Andrew. He designed a gorgeous droplet pearl hung from a diamond loop. I had borrowed pearl earrings as my 'something borrowed' for the day, and my garter was a blue made by Alice Temperley. My hair was a relaxed vibe with small plaits either side and flowers at the back.

FINDING THE DRESS | I didn't really find the 'finding the dress' experience particularly fun. Most shops did not have the romantic relaxed style I wanted in the right shape. I finally found the one I wanted and tried it on but it was really not what I had hoped at all! Once on I realised I wanted something totally different.

When I found this one I liked the layers of organza on the dress and the flattering bodice with a bow on the back and slowly but surely fell in love with it.

GROOM'S ATTIRE | As a Maclean I decided to wear my kilt. I made it a couple of years ago so that I could have a made to measure kilt for less than the price of a car! In fact it had been such a long time time since I made my kilt that I forgot the volume of work which went into making one and offered to make my best man's too! While Holly was cracking along at the last minute organising over the last couple of days I was still sewing and pressing pleats!

My best man, Josh, paid me back by hand making my dirk (long dagger) from damascus steel which I wore on the day and we cut the cake with.

I had thought about wearing a fly-plaid over my shoulder but on the day felt it was a bit too much.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | This was really important to us. We had our home church's band play for us. They had guitar, backing singers, drums, ukelele and mandolin. They did a lovely version of 'This is what you do' by Bethel Music, a fast country version of 'Amazing Grace' which was really fun and got everyone singing along. Also 'Nothing but the blood of Jesus' by Hillsong United and 'Holy Spirit' by Bryan and Katie Tomath.

Our readings were: 1 Corinthians13 which is Both of our favourite reading and we have inscribed on the inside of our rings. Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12 which speaks about 'The Cord Of Three Strands; the reason our engagement ring has three diamonds. Colossians 3 12-17.

We also added a little bit to the vows which we had seen done at some Nigerian friends of ours a couple of months before. After our vows we looked at each other and repeated after the vicar. It is taken from the book of Ruth :

Where you go I will go,
and where you stay I will stay.
Your people will be my people
and your God will be my God.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I wanted an antique lace look and found these beautiful dresses online. The bridesmaids each have a really individual look but these dresses really enhanced that individuality while bringing a pretty unity to the whole bridal party. Their beauty really did make me feel more beautiful!

THE FLOWERS | The flowers were bought from a local wholesalers and my mum and one of her friends did all the flower arranging. They did an incredible job and it definitely made the difference to the look and feel of our day.

THE CAKE | Was gifted to us by some lovely friends. They have an incredible friend who does some of the highest and brightest weddings in the land so they really wanted to give us this beautiful gift. Andrew and I trusted our friends implicitly so when they offered to look after all of it we gratefully jumped at it!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Colin!!! He is an awesome photographer and really added his hilarious and wonderful colour to our day. He is a wonderfully cheeky and charming guy to have around and made the boring stock family shots really fun while capturing our personality in the more intimate shots without being cheesy.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Rustic jugs, birdcages, we picked flowers from Holly's garden and dried them to be on the tables in vibrant pink. Candles and fairy lights. Blackboards with welcome notes and comments and personal touches to make guests feel welcome. We had lavender in the orders of service and on the knives and forks on the tables so the smell will always remind us of our wedding.

THE HONEYMOON | We went to Kalkan in Turkey which was out of this world. Hot sun, clear blue sea, cheap as chips and really great knock off designer leather goods! Andrew fell in love with swimming with the fishes (in a non-Godfather sense).

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Traditionally in Britain we didn't drink wine as the climate was too chilly to grow grapes. Mead is traditional and made from honey. For the first month of marriage a groom's mead would be bought by the father of the bride and this is why it is called the Honey-Moon! SO we chose to drink mead for the toasts which was available really cheaply from Morrisons and was one of the things people speak about most!

Andrew's brother James was MC and his speech was hilarious and gentle and loving and insulting all at the same time!

Holly walking into the church just blew my mind. I had loudly assured everyone that I wouldn't cry but that was more than my tear ducts were prepared for!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Sounds obvious but try to look at people when you speak to them to make them feel special. It s SO easy to be looking over their shoulder to someone you haven't seen for years. It is such a quick day that those seconds are critical.

Take a few minutes to just chat. Our venue was miles away form the church so we had about 40 minutes to chat on the way over. It was great! Otherwise it would have gone too fast.
