Fete Feel Bowties Scrabble & Bunting Wedding

Fete Feel Bowties Scrabble & Bunting Wedding

via

WWW readers Jasmine and Joe tied the knot on the 6th August 2014 at Yeldersley Hall in Derbyshire. With a vision of a fun, fete feel rustic wedding day they got stuck into the planning over the next 19 months.

There were so many wonderful touches and moments, from the surprise song Joe wrote for Jasmine to the memory board gift. It's all about those emotional and thoughtful details.

I just adore the boys in bow ties and braces, the fun fete games, the pretty bicycle and colourful home grown blooms. While Jasmine was utterly enchanting in her Justin Alexander lace gown with flowers in her hair.

A huge thank you today to Laura Rhian for sharing her delightful photographs today.

THE PROPOSAL | Joe and I had been together for six years since just before we turned 17, for our anniversary he whisked me away to Edinburgh which fell on Valentine's Day. However, I am one lucky lady as most years he takes me somewhere, so it didn't seem any different. Joe had got every second of the trip planned, on the second day, after lunch we walked to Edinburgh's Royal Botanic Gardens. We enjoyed walking around and I felt so relaxed, little did I know we kept walking around and around so Joe could seek out the perfect spot! Joe attempted to pull me up from the path to be under a big tree by a pond where the sun was streaming through the branches, but I refused, saying we shouldn't venture off the path!! We walked around again, eventually we were back at the same tree and I had no choice, Joe had a firm grip of my hand and hauled me up a slight bank to be under this tree. He pulled me in close and I could see tears in his eyes as he started telling me all the things he loved about me and how over the last few months he had been looking to buy me something really special. Joe got down on one knee and proposed. For once in my life (drama teacher) I was in shock and couldn't speak, I just about managed to mumble a yes.

We spent the rest of the day floating around Edinburgh and went out that evening for a stunning meal all dressed up and had an 8 course tasting menu-yum! We began phoning our parents and then things that had been going on that weekend fell into place. My Mum had almost managed to ruin Joe's surprise proposal.... On our first evening in Edinburgh my Mum had rung me to ask what on earth my Dad had phoned her for. Dad had rung my Mum and told her she must keep her phone on at all times over the next few days and to not ask questions and just do it, ensuring that she answered all calls. My Mum instantly phoned me to ask if I knew what was going on, I was also confused and started asking Joe what he thought about it as it was strange. My Mum and Dad get along but broke up when I was young.

My Mum phoned most of my family who decided that my Dad had either won the lottery or he had chosen Mum to be his phone a friend as he was on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (she would be useless - sorry Mum)! The morning of the day Joe proposed my Mum continued to call me asking many questions! Joe did take the phone off me and told Mum not to phone us again as we wanted to enjoy relaxing together and being in Edinburgh.

THE VISION | Once engaged we said we would wait a few weeks before we began planning... this obviously didn't happen! I immediately began religiously looking at WWW every day as well as other websites and magazines! We wanted a day that was full of fun and laughter with a mixture of vintage, fete and rustic styling. We wanted a huge celebration and party for everyone to enjoy!

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We began planning in the February when we got engaged and we got married 19 months later in August 2014 . We struggled to find our perfect venue, we wanted somewhere that we could make our own without having set suppliers you have to use; we wanted to find and use our own. Finding that venue was by far the most difficult part of the wedding, we didn't want a hotel or a well-known venue, we wanted somewhere beautiful that we could personalise. Finally, I did a search where I didn't type in Staffordshire instead I typed in Derbyshire and stumbled across Yeldersley Hall, a forty minute drive out in to the countryside from the church - perfect.

My sister Emily bought me a scrapbook and I did lots of cutting and sticking from magazines to gain inspiration, but I think I always knew what I had wanted, just needed the vision to put it all together in my mind. I had immediately selected our colours of bright red and a cornflower blue, but wanted as much colour as possible.

We realised that due to the nature of our venue we needed a co-ordinator for the wedding day and hired our friend and event planner Jie to do this for us. He did an absolutely fantastic job - the day ran smoothly and he co-ordinated everything down to a t.

BUDGET | Our wonderful parents helped us out a lot and without them we would never have had such a spectacular and magical day. We did a lot of things ourselves and pulled in a few favours from friends and family members to make our perfect day happen. Thank you so much to everybody ☺

THE VENUE | Yeldersley Hall, Yeldersley, near Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Justin Alexander 8653 in Alabaster/Gold. The shoes were from Oasis and were a sale bargain; my Mum bought me the matching necklace and bracelet as a gift - my something new, and the earrings were borrowed from my bridesmaid Lauren's Mum - my something borrowed.

FINDING THE DRESS | I visited towns in Cheshire with my Mum and sister Emily in an attempt to find the dress, they told me I looked beautiful in all of them - which was great to hear but not overly helpful! There wasn't one that felt super special. I spent another day searching with my Maid of Honour, Kelly, and bridesmaid, Lauren and tried on a dress with gold detailing in. Oddly, at first I wasn't overly keen; asking if the shop could get hold of it in just ivory, which they could. Lauren though kept telling me how it was perfect for me, and how the gold detailing matched my gold and ruby vintage style engagement ring as well as the overall look of the wedding we wanted, Kelly agreed and luckily they both went on and on, and it was a slow process but over the next half an hour (I still had the dress on - great sign) I was in love with the dress. My issue had been that my head wasn't open to new types of dresses as I had a stuck idea of what I wanted - which is usually great when wedding planning but not when dress hunting.

My dress was the Justin Alexander 8653 in Alabaster/Gold. I didn't look at the price prior to trying it on - big mistake but it turned out OK. I went home and told my Joe about how I had found the dress but it was almost double my dress budget and I was gutted, but knew I would find it cheaper. For the next few weeks I checked Ebay and Preloved daily but never found the dress. One day my Auntie rung to ask how we were getting on with wedding plans and I got this feeling to check Ebay, I did and being sold brand new at half price was the Justin Alexander dress in my size!

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Joe isn't a fan of shopping so having had no luck after one shopping spree he ordered about twenty suits off the internet. Joe found his perfect suit from Lambretta at Burtons. Joe's bow tie and matching square and the groomsmen's bow ties were from an Etsy shop HisNibbs. Joe's braces were from Burtons and his shoes were from TK Maxx.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | During the ceremony my brother Alex read the traditional Corinthians Bible reading. My sister Emily read Edward Monkton's A Lovely Love Story.

During the signing of the registers my Granddad Jim and youngest sister Lydia sang a hymn which had the whole church in tears, after this our good friends Nick and Joe W played guitar and sang The Beatle's Love Me Do and the congregation joined in. It was all so beautiful.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I had five beautiful bridesmaids. My long suffering best friend Kelly who I have been friends with since we were 11 was my Maid of Honour. My two sisters Emily and Lydia, and my two other best friends Lauren who I met at college and Hayley at Uni were my other bridesmaids. I spent a few months trawling websites and shops for the bridesmaid's dresses and discovered their stunning vintage style dresses in Miss Selfridge in the sale for a bargain.

I also had my three gorgeous cousins as our flower girls; Eve, Phoebe and Missi who wore dresses from Monsoon.

THE FLOWERS | My Mum's best friend Sarah is a florist and her business 'Flowers, flowers, flowers' did the bouquets and buttonholes as well as the bigger displays at the church. I always knew I wanted bright, colourful flowers with a vintage look and Sarah got them spot on, they were just stunning.

THE CAKE | My sister Emily immediately told us she wanted to decorate our wedding cake, so we happily let her. Two weeks prior to the wedding I baked the cake and then froze it and my sister received it 3 days before the wedding and spent many hours decorating it. It was so personal and we were touched, she designed and made it all herself.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Our photographer was the wonderful Laura Rhian Photography who was assisted by a very good school friend of mine - Adam Lowndes photography. It was so important to us that Joe was photographed the morning of the wedding as well as me! They were both so fantastic and just captured the emotion of the day in such a perfect way.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We made a lot ourselves - roping in my family, groomsmen and bridesmaids to help wherever possible.
We made all our own stationery - save the dates, invites and orders of service.

We made all the bunting ourselves - about 80 metres in total! We made the pom poms - these are a lot easier than you think such a fun way to decorate a venue! We also made the table names by buying cheap frames and decorating them.

My fab maid of honour and her parents as well as one of my bridesmaids grew flowers for us, I also nipped to a local cheap supermarket and bought £30 of flowers and we decorated Yeldersley Hall ourselves the day before!

My own vintage bike was used as the table plan by sticking luggage tags on to it and decorating with lots and lots of flowers.

We made some fete games to add some extra fun and enjoyment to our day - Bat the Rat, Hook a Duck, Ball in a Bucket and a Coconut Shy. We also made our own wedding signs for the bar, toilets, welcome drinks etc. We made a huge effort on collecting glass jars which we used to serve the pimms and lemonade in on arrival to Yeldersley Hall. We also used jars and big coffee jars to decorate the wedding venue, decorating them in lace and hessian and putting pretty flowers in them.

My sister Em had remembered that I wanted memory boards full of people's memories of Joe and to display at the wedding and then keep, however, in the grand scheme of wedding planning these had been long forgotten. The day before the wedding Kelly and Lauren gave us a huge memory board that they had decorated in the same materials and design as our stationery and had asked all our closest friends to write their memories! The morning of the wedding my sister Emily gave me the family version and it was just amazing that they had remembered and gone to all that effort for us, we have had them framed to keep forever.

My good friend and colleague Laura drew us a giant colour in canvas of Joe and me for guests to colour in at the wedding - this was a wedding gift from her - what an amazing gift! Guests coloured this in and it hangs on our living room wall.

We invited all our guests to bake something for our wedding bake off which was fabulous and so many people took part - everyone filled their plate full of cakes and desserts!

We gave everyone an engraved red guitar pick as the favour as well as having a sweets table for our guests to enjoy - this was full of our favourites; mini eggs, chocolate buttons,

THE HONEYMOON | 10 days in Bali. Our fabulous wedding guests were a huge help in getting us there, thank you! It was bliss; however, three days in Joe managed to trip on the pavement and broke his ankle! It was still magical though, now we have an excuse to one day return!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | In the morning whilst getting ready the bridesmaids and my Mum sat me down and put Joe's laptop in front of me. I had been out running wedding errands the week before and had left Joe making bunting; we had fallen out as I didn't understand how he had got so little done! I understood fully when, on the wedding morning, my bridesmaids played a video of Joe singing and playing guitar having written a song for me - so emotional and such a special moment, a perfect way to start the wedding day!

He then went on to surprise me further as during the speeches Joe pulled out a guitar from under the top table that the groomsmen had snuck in! He then performed the song for everyone, and after he had also written me a poem! So romantic, I am so lucky!

Another special moment was my Grandad and little sister Lydia singing a hymn during the signing of the registers, followed by Nick and another Joe playing guitar and singing Love Me Do by The Beatles with guests joining in!

Just having everyone with there with us was so fabulous.

The men decided to have a game of football before the evening began - this was how relaxed guests felt- groomsmen vs. non groomsmen, it was great.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Do it your way! There were a few things members of my family and friends were unsure about including the colour scheme, but we knew it was right for us and these few people ate their words!!

It was such a busy year for us as I was teacher training and Joe was doing his first year and we realised how vital it is to take time to just be together enjoying our engagement and that time in your relationship.

People want to be involved! Ask for favours from people and they are more than happy help!

Things will go wrong, don't dwell on it, we found out about a couple of things afterwards and it really doesn't matter. On the day we also knew of a couple of things including one of the fridges breaking so champagne wasn't served for the toasts and the white wine wasn't cold - guests still got their wine and champagne was served later in the evening - such a small part of our day. There was also a delay on food (no fault of our fabulous caterers) and this meant we did the speeches first - this actually worked out really well and guests commented on how much better it was doing it that way around - something for others to consider.
