Bursts of burnt tangerine, mustard, and amber bloom from the floating gardens and radiate from the honey-colored trees that overlook the waters of Yu Garden, in Shanghai. The Yu Garden, also known as the "Garden of Happiness," is an ample sanctuary located in the old part of Shangai, and a beautiful place to take a break from the frenzied energy of the big city. It was commissioned by minister Pan Yunduan in 1559, during the Ming Dynasty, as a gift to his father — a place to escape and relax in his elderly years. Travel tip: Despite being tucked away in the city, the garden is quite accessible. Just take the number 10 metro line to the Yuyuan Garden Station. (
