Now through May 22, Pop-In@Nordstrom is partnering with the much-loved skin care brand Aesop, celebrating the simple virtues of our daily routines. In this blog series, we explore five skin care rituals with Aesop's own Dr. Kate Forbes, general manager of products and research & development.

'It is spring again. The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart.' Rainer Maria Rilke

Spring has sprung and here we are. Do you notice your skin feels different?

Nordstrom blogs: Let's talk about this product range.

Dr. Kate Forbes: Yes! We've got hand and body products and we've also got two products for the skin. With seasonal change, kind of like how you change your clothes, you should change your skincare. Moving into spring, we talking about cleansing the skin to prepare it for what's ahead. After a cold winter, especially, then moving into a warmer season-it takes time for your skin to adapt. Part of our Aesop approach is to listen to what your skin is saying. You may need moisturization. You may need cleansing. You always need to be thinking about hydration.

Parsely Seen Serum is perhaps the iconic Aesop product, but the Geranium Leaf Body Scrub is particularly interesting to me.

The Geranium Leaf Body Scrub helps you shed your skin. Exfoliation is something we recommend once or twice a week to prepare the skin for optimal hydration. An important point to note with the body scrub here is the exfoliants in use: we've got a blend of pumice and bamboo stem. We use three different grades of exfoliants to get a gentle and also significant effect. Many exfoliating products use small plastic beads, and it never made sense to us why you would want to put plastic beads into a product when you have these natural physical exfoliants. Why would you want to clean your skin with plastic? Obviously there are environmental issues there, too, but it just isn't fitting for us. We look for botanical ingredients when we can, that have good efficacy. Our pumice and bamboo stems do what we want them to do.

What's the geranium leaf doing, providing a fragrance?

When we look at the essential oils that we use in our products, we believe fragrance should always be the secondary benefit. The geranium, and the bergamot and mandarin in this product are all very cleansing ingredients. Citrus oils are known to be quite cleansing. So it has that secondary benefit of refreshing and enlightening the senses with the aroma it provides. But we're always looking at efficacy as the primary benefit.

The Primrose Cleansing Masqueand the Parsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Serum are also important in this selection. The Primrose Cleansing Masque is something you apply to draw impurities from the skin. The clay draws them out. TheParsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Serum deliversantioxidants to the skin with a light veil of hydration.
