For our spring 2016 beauty trends photoshoot, we tapped the genius Kali Kennedy to work her magic on our models. When this California native wasn't waving her beauty wands or taking selfies with just about everyone on set, she took some time to tell us about how she got into makeup artistry, her best makeup advice and what it's like living and breathing beauty. Get to know Kali Kennedy-a force of positivity who takes a refreshing approach to her craft.

YOUR BEAUTY PHILOSOPHY
Every unique feature you have is something that nobody else possesses, and those features are what make you beautiful-that freckly skin, big brows or whatever. You can't not love the beautiful parts about you that make you unique. I tell people they're beautiful every day, and I mean it. Everybody needs to be told that they're beautiful, because they are.

ON GETTING INTO MAKEUP ARTISTRY
I got into makeup through my grandmother. She was a painter. She taught me how to paint-with watercolors first then acrylic. She taught me everything I know about color theory, the color wheel and blending, shades, tones-sort of all of the key components that you need to become a makeup artist. She's why I am where I am now. To become a makeup artist, it's so important to know all those fine details and about color, blending and matching and all the components.

A TYPICAL WORKDAY IS LIKE
For me, every day is different...work isn't in an office, it's in a studio, or sometimes like some majestic, beautiful rocks in the middle of nowhere, other times I'm in somebody's home.

Wherever it may be, I walk into my job and meet the models and the crew, which can sometimes be 100 people. There are certain jobs where crews are huge-most people don't know how many people work so hard to get the final results. That's probably the most fun part of my job though; I love working with different people. I'm a social person. I love different personalities and the joys that I get communicating with different people every day.

With editorial shoots, creativity is limitless. You get to do whatever you want to do-within the constraints of whoever's giving you the direction. You get to create your own fantastical world, and you get to manipulate things and make things into exactly what's going on in your brain.

Then, throughout the day, we work to make sure that everybody's touched up and beautiful and go through our shot counts and make sure that the client's getting everything they want. Then we end the dream. Everybody packs up and leaves and we start a new dream the next day.

Anytime I'm not working, I literally spend my nights, weekends, playing with products and textures and rubbing them into my skin and making sure that they sit the way I want them to sit on my skin. And then the test is to take it onto set and make sure that it's translating on your model.

POWER OF MAKEUP
Makeup can change a mood instantly. It can transform somebody's terrible day into a great day. It can give you confidence and maybe even make you feel more like yourself. It's a ritual people can create.

WHAT GETS YOU EXITED
There's nothing more amazing to me than skin with no makeup on it because you literally have everything right in front of you to create anything you want. You have a blank canvas to take advantage of and do whatever you want. You can become Cleopatra, you can become a pirate, you can become a beautiful woman with big, red lips. You can put freckles on yourself if you don't have freckles. It's just the power to create whatever you want is at your fingertips.

ON THE NO-MAKEUP MAKEUP TREND
I would explain the popularity of the no makeup makeup look by saying it's that old theory, beauty comes from within. To me, that means you don't have to over-enhance-you don't have to do an eye, lip, brow and cheek all at once. It's something that should really just enhance the features that you were given that kind of pinpoints what you already have. It's not overdone, it's very simple and clean, and it's also something that everybody can do. Everybody can do no makeup makeup.

BEST MAKEUP ADVICE
There are no rules. There are no guidelines, and I would encourage people to make more mistakes. Makeup is not permanent. Makeup is something that you can remove, you can change, you can smudge, you can tweak it. If you have to take a brush and remove a line, that's no big deal. That's not something that's going to ruin the day. And sometimes those mistakes turn into something that's really amazing. Like, you turn winged liner into a line that's going into your crease, and it creates a cool mod eye.

ON SPRING
'Fresh' is the first word that pops into my mind when I think about spring makeup. It's something that will just make you glow from the inside out. It's something that will truly make you radiate exactly how you're feeling about a new season and something that's exciting and new and trend-driven. It's like you get to really just knock it out of the park with all of the energy you've been keeping inside through the winter and fall months.

Right now, I'm most excited about robin's egg blue. I love blue in general, and I think a really milky tone of blue is so beautiful and vibrant and special.

HER BEAUTY SECRET
Beauty is something that's unique, and that cliché I've already mentioned, "beauty comes from within," is not cliché at all. Once you have the opportunity to sit down and show people where their beauty really comes from, it's just a magical and special experience.
