WHY THERE? I was about to move from Ft. Myers, Florida, to Seattle, and wanted to go somewhere for one last weekend of island hopping. I had never been to St. John or Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands and made a spontaneous decision to check them out.

WHERE DID YOU STAY? We stayed in an Airbnb near Cruz Bay in St. John and took a ferry to Jost Van Dyke, which was really the highlight of the trip.

DON'T-MISS ACTIVITIES: Taking the ferry over to Jost Van Dyke was an amazing experience. We arrived on the island at 9am and were literally the only ones on the beach. The snorkeling was fantastic; there were underwater trails through the reefs that are part of the Virgin Islands national park system. I saw so many fish and turtles; it was an otherworldly experience. There are also cool hiking trails to explore the island.

IF YOU COULD LIVE THERE, WHAT WOULD YOU DO FOR A LIVING? It's so funny, I was actually sitting next to a couple on the flight over who had just bought a house there to escape from it all. I'd be a freelance artist: there's so much on the island to be inspired by.

BEST FIND: I found an amazing piece of coral on the beach; the ombré colors were like nothing I'd seen before. I have it framed in a shadow box-I feel like I found treasure.

FAVORITE RESTAURANTS: We actually went during hurricane season, so a lot of the restaurants on St. John were closed or had limited menus. On Jost Van Dyke, though, we loved One Love Bar and Grille; it was right on the beach and they served us cocktails with fresh nutmeg that were heavenly.

PACKING TIPS: Pack lots of active gear for hiking-and tons of bug spray or you'll be miserable. I actually wished I had packed more maxi dresses; people definitely seemed to get dressed up more for dinner on St. John.

FAVORITE MEMORY: Being completely alone on that gorgeous, peaceful beach.

Jost Van Dyke is the smallest of the British Virgin Islands. To get there, fly to St. John or Tortola and connect to the island by ferry.
