Hannah & Farlan's Colourful Garden Party Wedding

Written by: louise

It's no secret I love an intimate wedding, and all the better when it's relaxed, fun and all about family! Hannah & Farlan decided to celebrate their marriage with a chilled out summer garden party, their guests dressed in relaxed attire, sipping champagne and beer and enjoying an afternoon tea of sweet treats and wedding cake. Hannah's style is sweet and informal, with her pretty lace dress and braided hair accessorised simply with a few brightly coloured flowers. She dressed her maids in colour-clashing red and pink and they carried wild and colourful bouquets by Dutch floral master, Don Florito who's work I just adore. Anouschka Rokebrand captured the whole day.

Farlan and I met at salsa classes in Amsterdam. He had moved from Australia to Amsterdam earlier that year and he came over with a five year plan. Farlan had already completed the first course when I started taking classes and there were never enough men, so he usually helped out as an extra whenever he could and I tried to grab him (as my dancing partner!) as often as I could. About two years later Farlan asked me to marry him in the botanical garden in Amsterdam, it was about then as well that he decided to throw his five year plan out the window and settle down with me.

We wanted a small and intimate wedding with all the people most important to us. We both have big families so small was not as small as we initially had in mind. But we managed to keep the intimate feeling for our day. We wanted it to be a relaxed summer party, not to formal and room for everyone to be themselves and come as they are. Our venue, Koetshuis Hulshorst, is located in Hulshorst a little country town about an hours drive from Amsterdam. We came across it on a Dutch wedding venue directory and we made an appointment for a first meeting. We met with Tina, who owns the venue with her husband. She also coordinates the weddings, and after talking for a while it was obvious she got perfectly what vibe and feel we wanted to create on our wedding day. Furthermore the venue itself looked just perfect and was exactly what we were looking for. It was cute, in the country and it matched perfectly with the overall style we had in mind.

The bouquets and buttonholes were created by Don Florito. I made an appointment and she also quickly understood exactly what we were going for. She gave me a colour scheme for the flowers made out of ribbons which I gave to Tina at the venue for the reception flowers. They matched perfectly! Most of our inspiration came from Pinterest, it's very addictive! Besides that we had our sister in-law in Australia who is a wedding planner and she gave us some good pointers along the way. We tried to do DIY as much as we could to give it a personal touch. We collected loads of mason jars over the last months and put glitter on the bottom, and they were used for flowers and tea lights. We had two sets of flags - Dutch flag and Australian representing our nationalities. We made some signs to remind guests that the ceremony was unplugged and after that so share any photo's with us by using a hash tag. We also had a sign with the guest book and a small sign surrounded with loved ones that had passed away and could not be there other than in our hearts. I also designed the save the dates and the invitations myself!

Our photographer was Anouschka Rokebrand, together with her husband Raymond, who we found on Don Florito's website. I loved her style, the light she uses and just the over all pictures. We read some reviews and found out more about her on her website so event before actually meeting Anouschka and Ray I was really sure that they were the photographers for us! We loved the fact that they work together as a team and therefore are able to catch most (if not all) the special moments you want on camera. Tears, laughter, crazy dancing. Capturing those moments was most important to us and we believed (and are now convinced) that they were able to get those moments on film for us.
