Elegant and Pretty English Garden Wedding | Bridal Musings

Are you a budding English Rose bride?

Well then dive right in and smell the peonies... this gorgeous British garden wedding is bright, pretty, and filled with florals.

Despite being a September soiree, Jen and Iain's countryside nuptials are as fresh as spring. From rustic woodland to romantic wildflowers, beautiful manicured grounds to sweet floral decor, this flower-themed affair is every inch a clean, chic and charming wedding.

Photographed beautifully by Victoria Phipps Photography, on the gorgeous Abbeywood Estate, these images capture all of Jen and Iain's hard work in creating their day, from apple green dresses and a gorgeous lace gown, to a dashing groom and a rather dapper wedding car, oh and lots, and lots, of flowers.

Glorious and green-fingered...Enjoy!

The Inspiration

Despite getting married in September, I've always loved the bright pastel colours that you get in spring and decided on a mixed colour palette of greens, pinks, yellows and whites. We were very lucky that our wedding was set in a glass house surrounded by beautiful gardens, and for this reason we decided upon a floral/English Country Garden theme. I liked the idea of bringing the outside in so left most of the decoration down to the floral arrangements.

The Ceremony

We opted for a civil ceremony as we wanted to have all the wedding in one place. We chose two readings for the ceremony, which were "Yes, I'll marry you my dear" by Pam Ayres, and "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" by Louis de Bernieres.

Our processional song was "Come Away With Me" by Nora Jones, our first dance song was "Ho Hey" by The Lumineers.

The Photography

We chose Victoria initially because we liked the look of her work on her website, and thought she had the right mix of formal and informal shots. We met up with Victoria and she was really warm and friendly. We were confident she was not going to be too intrusive (like other photographers we've experienced in the past), but just intrusive enough to get the shots we wanted to capture our special day.

The Flowers

We had a variety of big beautiful peony style roses in pinks, whites and yellows, mixed with hypericon berries, rebeccia seed heads, hydrangeas, eucalyptus leaves and variegated trailing ivy. For our main table centre-pieces we used birdcages in the floral display, to enhance the English country garden theme. On the top table our display consisted of a long and low arrangement, and also of flower filled glass jars and bottles. At either end of the top table we used large floor standing candelabra's to help bring more colour and flowers to the room.

The Decor & Details

The majority of our decoration consisted of the floral centrepieces, candelabras, and hung wicker hearts threaded with roses. For months before the wedding we collected glass jars and bottles which we decorated with different ribbons and lace, which were filled with flowers and made up our top table arrangement. They were also used as tea light holders. For our table plan we used a large birdcage decorated by the florist, and had flower names as our table names.

The Refreshments

After the wedding ceremony we provided glasses of Prosecco and canapes for our guests in Abbeywood's gardens and then went on to have a formal sit down three course meal (all provided by Stables Cuisine). We opted for informal bacon and sausage sandwiches for our evening guests. Our wedding cake was a round 3-tier fruitcake, made by me (the bride) and my mum.

Advice for Other Couples

You're only going to do this once so enjoy your wedding/wedding planning and don't stress too much over the small details. I recommend spending a lot of time when you first get engaged looking at wedding magazines and internet sites (such as Pinterest) to get an idea of colour schemes, flowers, decorations etc so you can see what you like and what you don't like which will help guide your big day. From a budgeting point of view, I suggest sorting out the biggest costs first (the venue, the dress, the catering etc), and then seeing what money you have left in your budget for all the smaller details.

Favourite Moment

Like most married people say to you before your wedding, your special day flies by so fast and it's difficult to take in everything that's going on around you. However, I'd say my favourite parts of the day were seeing how all the little details we'd been planning for the best part of a year all came together (especially the flowers), putting my wedding dress on in the morning and having that feeling that you're getting married today and feeling really special. Going for a drive in the wedding car after the ceremony and having some time with your new husband away from the guests to help take things in.

I think that last picture is my favourite!

Isn't it just such a pretty garden wedding? It feels rather vintage and nostalgic, yet fresh and current at the same time. I had a peak at Abbeywood Estate's website too, it looks like a really versatile venue.

Thanks so much to Jen and Iain for sharing their floral affair with us, and here's to a blooming and beautiful life together.
