A Guide to the Right Styling Product for Your Hair Type

It seems a bit unfair that our tresses have such a hold over our emotions. Case in point: waking up to smooth, perfectly tousled waves is the type of rare, beautiful occurrence that can leave our serotonin levels soaring through the roof. A bad hair day, on the other hand? We’ll do you a favor and just tell you in advance to stay out of our warpath. The good news is that there are thousands of products out there to fight frizz, hold curl and smooth kinks. But with quantity comes a downside: how exactly are you supposed to know which products will work on your hair?

We got the inside scoop from celebrity hairdresser Ruth Roche and present to you MDC’s ultimate guide to the right styling product for your hair type. Bad hair day – you’ve met your match.

Straight hair: “Straight hair doesn’t have to mean flat hair,” says Roche. She recommends adding a volumizing spray or mousse all over your locks before blow-drying to add bounce and body.

Product picks: Redken Full Frame 07 – Protective Volumize Mousse; Ojon Volume Advance Volumizing Styling Spray; Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray

Wavy hair: Scrunch a texturizing spray onto damp locks for piecey model-off-duty waves. To tame wild waves, tie hair in loose braids and leave them in for a few minutes before spritzing away.

Product picks: Pureology Sea-Kissed Texturizer; L’Oréal EverStyle Texture Series Beach Spray; Josie Maran Bohemian Waves Argan Hair Mist

Curly: Roche recommends finding a moisturizing curl definer that also has hold, like Pureology Illuminating Curl – “It will keep your curls shiny and separated,” she says.

Product picks: Kérastase Crème Olèo-Curl; Paul Mitchell Super Sculpt; Ouidad Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel

Natural: “If you want to get to the most basic level, use a light leave-in conditioner to tame flyaways,” says Roche. It will also give your hair an extra dose of moisture, which is especially important during the dry winter months.

Product picks: Redken Extreme Anti-Snap/Distressed Hair Treatment; Dark and Lovely Healthy-Gloss 5 Moisture Leave In Treatment; Kinky-Curly Knot Today

Fine: Fine-haired ladies need volume and hold – but not too much so that your hair looks stiff and unnatural. Instead of reaching for your trusty hairspray, try a root-lifting mousse instead; Roche says it will give you volume and leave the rest of your hair to move more freely.

Product picks: Redken Gut 10 Volume Spray Foam; Big Sexy Hair Root Pump Plus Humidity Resistant Volumizing Spray Mousse; TIGI Catwalk Your Highness Root Boost Spray

Thick: To smooth down thick hair and make it “skinnier”, a smoothing or shine serum is the way to go. Apply to wet hair before styling, and you’ll be amazed at the sleek, shiny locks you end up with.

Product picks: Kérastase Nutritive Serum Oleo-Relax; The Body Shop Grapeseed Glossing Serum; Davines MOMO Fluid
